Day 4 of #FitFlowChallenge is one of my favorite upper back openers and shoulder stretches, Puppy Dog pose or Anahatasana. This can be performed up on blocks for a deeper stretch (check out @mackenzieyoga 's page for this variation). Don't sacrifice the health of your shoulders for the depth of the pose though. Find a healthy balance between spreading your shoulder blades and hugging your forearms as you drop your chest. Oh, and don't forgot to lift your navel to protect your low back. Day 3 of #FitFlowChallenge is a “rocky” boat pose, Navasana, sequence. Check out my bestie's page @mackenzieyoga for the video. Personally, I've always loved corework but never really enjoyed Navasana because I didn't really understand it. My hip flexors would burn and I had pain in my low back. Day 2 of #FitFlowChallenge is a jump squat. It was my bestie @mackenzieyoga who taught me how to do this correctly in order to keep my knees safe. To perform a jump squat you start with your feet hips width apart, bend your knees as you sit the hips back and down, and jump explosively into the air. When you land, go back the same way you came and distribute the weight from the ball of the foot to the heal. Then you'll be ready to explode off the ball the foot again. In yoga we never use our calves and definitely not explosively. So, if you’re new to explosive movement don’t be shocked if your calves are super sore tomorrow!! I love to pair this workout with my favorite upbeat tunes too! You'd be surprised at what @mackenzieyoga and I listen to when we're together. The last time she was in LA, we rapped (a product of growing up in the early 90's) to 'Regulators' by Warren G and Nate Dog. It was hilarious to say the least. It's so easy to stay in a bad mood and blame someone else (in my case, my husband @diceyoga) for my state of mind. But that isn't a healthy way of living. Being responsible for my own actions and feelings has been the greatest lesson I've learned through practicing Acro Yoga. Last year, when I was flying from LA to Sydney, an air hostess spilled boiling water on my knee and I suffered 2nd degree burns. It was terribly painful but I was most worried about the scar. I laugh every time I see this pic in my photo album on my phone. I've been wanting to post it but have always felt there were too many funny things about it. Weird arm position and funny leg position to name a couple but I also remember wishing I had a nice mat for my super bony butt. My favorite mat right now is @yoyo_mats, the world's only self-rolling fitness and yoga mat @kickstarter Stays flat while in use and stays rolled up for easy transportation and storage!
