#MakingShapes with my hubby is always an adventure. Dice has never felt comfortable in front of a camera and I literally spent my teenage years in front of one. We use to fight every time we did a photoshoot together. He would retreat into his discomfort shell and I would take his reaction personally. Over the past few years we've both learned how to meet in the middle by practicing compassion for one another. We love the yoga asana practice but are so thankful for the yoga that exists in our relationship and daily lives. When we teach together, no matter the state of our emotions before the workshop, doing what we love together usually irons things out. Someone once commented on a pic of me in this very same pose saying, "don't you ever do anything else?" Im all for expanding my comfort zone but have also worked long and hard on finding some stillness in my yoga practice. So, my 'go to' inversion is usually this one because the backbend helps me find my balance quickly and...it just feels darn good (shouldn't that be the main goal in our practice? Not what someone else thinks!) I'm not saying this is easy but through practice and mind body connection, it is achievable! Our first #ValentinesDay together was 8 days after our first date. I knew Dice was my soul mate in that first 24 hours we spent together. So on Vday 2010 we took my daughter, Taylor to her favorite restaurant so they could 'officially' meet. Those two Libras hit it off immediately and are still a strong team, even as she moves into double-digits (moms of daughters, you know what I mean). So even though Vday is typically for couples, we carry on our little tradition by celebrating, not only our love for one another, but also what our love has created...our family! 'Sexy' has not been in my vocab for almost 3 years! Through pregnancy, child-birth, and breast feeding my husband has always told me that I'm sexy to him. But I've felt the exact opposite. 2015 has been the return of feeling in my skin again. I don't think looking sexy is important but 'feeling' sexy from time to time is a key foundation to my relationship with Dice! SELFLESS SELFIE CELEBRATION / CHALLENGE DAY 6 Pose : Virabhadrasana/Warrior 2 Yogi : Peter Smyth (My Dad) Both of my parents are entrepreneurs. For as long as I can remember they've worked from home and are always reinventing themselves. Life isn't always peachy and there have definitely been a number of ups and downs both financially and personally. But my father, Peter has always kept a positive attitude, worked his butt off, and persevered. Since he is an athlete (ex rugby player and surfer) he tends to approach his yoga practice that way. Clenching his jaw and groaning through knee pain in various poses. I remember when @RobertSturman took this shot. I was adjusting his Vira 2 so his knee was supported and reminding him to 'soften and ease' into the pose rather than muscle it. On the flip side, he reminds me to work my butt off for my dreams and to rise up, even when you're knocked down. We've always balanced each other out that way. Thanks Dad! Next steps... 1. SELFLESS SELFIE CELEBRATION / CHALLENGE DAY 2 Pose : any backbend Yogi : @Glitzygolf Golf and Bri went to high school together in Bangkok, Thailand and were recently reconnected at a yoga conference a couple years ago. At the time, Golf was suffering from depression and body image issues. She told us a story about a yoga teacher that told her she could never do yoga because she didn't fit the mold of a skinny, size 0 yoga teacher. Through our travels we've met quite a few people who felt and still feel intimidated by public yoga classes. We believe that the Yoga practice is for everyone...all shapes, sizes, colors, ages and genders! We are so proud of Golf because she didn't let anybody get her down. She completed her yoga teacher training last year and is currently teaching yoga classes and workshops for curvy girls in Bangkok, Thailand and inspiring us all to embrace who we are and love our bodies! The SELFLESS SELFIE CELEBRATION / CHALLENGE is starting! Day 1 (tomorrow), we are celebrating the pose REVERSE WARRIOR. This shot was taken in Vietnam by fellow co-host, @robertsturman . The yogi we are celebrating is Pam Smyth, my (Bri's) 67 year old mom! My mom has always and continues to inspire me and I am so grateful she practices yoga! There are many benefits to this simple yet effective pose...stretching the hip flexors and obliques to name a few. Mom loves this pose because it feels so good to take a deep breath in! Now it's your turn! As a participant, your job will be to find a person to photograph in the pose and post their picture. Show them love and let them be the focus! This will nourish both of you. Please use the hashtag #selflesscelebration make sure to follow all the hosts, and repost this picture. Celebration RECAP The concept is simple but so nourishing and important. Because people post so many images of themselves, we would like to inspire our community to consider designating one image a day, beginning on FEBRUARY 1, celebrating someone else. Maybe someone who does not consider themselves 'one of those people who belongs in photos.’ During the 10 days, you can celebrate the same person or different people - that is up to you. A beautiful image, celebrating the other, can change a person's life. So here's how it works. The celebration will run from 2/1-2/10. Each day one of the yoga teacher hosts will pick a pose and post a picture of someone in that day's pose (usually posted the night before). @robertsturman will post some excellent pointers each day on how best to photograph the pose. That will be the pose for the day. We will be choosing 4 individuals who inspire or touch us in a memorable way, which could be the subject or the photographer. @robertsturman has donated 1 photo shoot @bryceyoga is donating passes to their weekend workshops and @yulady @geraldsaluti and @ashikagogna will each be donating one Skype yoga lesson. We are super excited to bring you this celebration and can't wait to see what you see through the lens. Let's celebrate other people together and watch them shine.;
