This is Bou Meng. He is one of the last 2 living survivors out of the known 7 who made it out of Tuol Sleng alive. He was brought in with his wife and two children, who were all brutally executed, while he "lived on" & suffered here for about two years. His life was spared only because of his ability to paint amazing portraits. When the Khmer Rouge was overthrown, he saw an opportunity to escape and took it. His ability to smile and persevere after the incredible suffering he's been through is a true testament to the strength of the human spirit #TuolSleng #PhnomPenh; -
Classroom after classroom divided into tiny cells no bigger than a small closet where prisoners were shackled to the floor. Food was scarce and showers almost unheard of. The horror of this place is so heavy it's hard to breathe inside the buildings. #TuolSleng #PhnomPenh #BeyondDestinations;

During the Khmer Rouge era in the 1970's this high school was transformed into a torture & prison facility that saw the death of close to 20,000 people- men, women, children, & elders. Some classrooms were turned into cells, others into torture chambers. Even the students exercise equipment in the "playground" was altered into torture mechanisms.
