Want to #BeAnAstronaut? In anticipation of returning human spaceflight launches to American soil, and in preparation for our journey to Mars, we will soon begin accepting applications for the next class of astronaut candidates. With more human spacecraft in development in the United States today than at any other time in history, future astronauts will launch once again from the Space Coast of Florida on American-made commercial spacecraft, and carry out deep-space exploration missions that will advance a future human mission to Mars. The next class of astronauts may fly on any of four different U.S. vessels during their careers: the International Space Station, two commercial crew spacecraft currently in development by U.S. companies, and our Orion deep-space exploration vehicle. From pilots and engineers, to scientists and medical doctors, we select qualified astronaut candidates from a diverse pool of U.S. citizens with a wide variety of backgrounds. We will accept applications from Dec. 14 through mid-February and expect to announce candidates selected in mid-2017. Stay tuned! Whopping Galaxy Cluster Spotted: Astronomers have discovered a giant gathering of galaxies in a very remote part of the universe, thanks to our Spitzer Space Telescope and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). This galaxy cluster, located 8.5 billion light-years away, is the most massive structure yet found at such great distances. Galaxy clusters are gravitationally bound groups of thousands of galaxies, which themselves each contain hundreds of billions of stars. The clusters grow bigger and bigger over time as they acquire new members. The red galaxies at the center of the image make up the heart of the galaxy cluster. This color image is constructed from multi-wavelength observations: Infrared observations from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope are shown in red; near-infrared and visible light is green and blue; and radio light is purple. In addition to galaxies, clusters also contain a reservoir of hot gas with temperatures in the tens of millions of degrees Celsius/Kelvin. Think about it, a teenager doesn't know a world where humans haven't lived and worked in space. Since Nov. 2, 2000, NASA astronauts and our international partners work off the Earth, for the Earth. From 1998 to 2011, five different space agencies representing 15 countries assembled the station, the largest structure ever built in space. Smoke Ring for a Halo Two stars shine through the center of a ring of cascading dust in this image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The star system is named DI Cha, and while only two stars are apparent, it is actually a quadruple system containing two sets of binary stars. As this is a relatively young star system it is surrounded by dust. The young stars are molding the dust into a wispy wrap. Happy Halloween! We present a solar 'pumpkin!' Active regions on the sun combined to look something like a jack-o-lantern’s face on October 2014. The image was captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, which watches the sun at all times from its orbit in space. The active regions in this image appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy. Halloween Skies to Include Dead Comet Flyby: The large space rock that will safely zip past Earth this Halloween is most likely a dead comet that, fittingly, bears an eerie resemblance to a skull. This image of asteroid 2015 TB145 was generated using radar data collected by the National Science Foundation's 1,000-foot (305-meter) Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. The radar image was taken on Oct. 30, 2015, and the image resolution is 25 feet (7.5 meters) per pixel. A Full View of Pluto's Stunning Crescent: In September, the New Horizons team released a stunning but incomplete image of Pluto's crescent. Thanks to new processing work by the science team, New Horizons is releasing the entire, breathtaking image of Pluto. This image was made just 15 minutes after New Horizons' closest approach to Pluto on July 14, 2015, as the spacecraft looked back at Pluto toward the sun. The backlighting highlights more than a dozen high-altitude layers of haze in Pluto's tenuous atmosphere. The horizontal streaks in the sky beyond Pluto are stars, smeared out by the motion of the camera as it tracked Pluto. Astronaut Selfie from Space! Scott Kelly took this photograph during a spacewalk outside the space station Wednesday. Sharing the image on social media, Kelly wrote, "#SpaceWalkSelfie Back on the grid! Great first spacewalk yesterday. Now on to the next one next week. #YearInSpace." This was the first spacewalk for both Kelly and astronaut Kjell Lindgren. Today, Oct. 29, Kelly becomes the U.S. astronaut who has lived in space the longest during a single U.S. spaceflight, and on Monday, Nov. 2, the crew celebrates the 15th year of a continuous human presence in space aboard the station. Deep Dive Through Enceladus Plume Complete (artist concept): Our Cassini spacecraft successfully completed its close flyby of Saturn's moon Enceladus today, passing 30 miles (49 kilometers) above the moon's south polar region at approximately 8:22 a.m. PDT (11:22 a.m. EDT). Mission controllers established two-way communication with the spacecraft this afternoon and expect it to begin transmitting data from the encounter this evening. Astronaut Scott Kelly tries on his spacesuit on the International Space Station. Kelly and Flight Engineer Kjell Lindgren will venture outside the station for a pair of spacewalks, the first of their careers, on Wednesday, Oct. 28 and Friday, Nov. 6. The Oct. 28 spacewalk is set to last six hours and 30 minutes. It will be the 32nd U.S. spacewalk, and will focus on station upgrades and maintenance tasks. NASA TV coverage will begin at 6:30 a.m. EDT. Enceladus is a world divided. To the north, the terrain is covered in impact craters, much like other icy moons. But to the south, the record of impact cratering is much more sparse, and instead the land is covered in fractures, ropy or hummocky terrain and long, linear features. The image was taken in visible green light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on July 27, 2015. The spacecraft will sample the ocean of Enceladus on Wednesday, Oct. 28, when it flies through the moon's plume of icy spray. This image shows the galaxy Messier 94, which lies in the small northern constellation of the Hunting Dogs, about 16 million light-years away. Within the bright ring or starburst ring around Messier 94, new stars are forming at a high rate and many young, bright stars are present within it. The cause of this peculiarly shaped star-forming region is likely a pressure wave going outwards from the galactic center, compressing the gas and dust in the outer region. The compression of material means the gas starts to collapse into denser clouds. Inside these dense clouds, gravity pulls the gas and dust together until temperature and pressure are high enough for stars to be born. Artist's conception of a hot Jupiter, previously thought to be lonely planets. Scientists have now discovered one hot Jupiter with two close companions, leading to new ideas about planet formation. Until now, some 300 hot Jupiters have been identified over the past two decades, and this is the first time any close-in planets were discovered. This new discovery is helpful to scientists who are trying to understand how planets form and move in solar systems. The National Hurricane Center said that Hurricane Patricia had grown into a monster hurricane. In fact, it is the strongest eastern north pacific hurricane on record. a Hurricane Warning was in effect from San Blas to Punta San Telmo. A Hurricane Watch was in effect from east of Punta San Telmo to Lazaro Cardenas and a Tropical Storm Warning was in effect from east of Punta San Telmo to Lazaro Cardenas.
