October 10th is Taiiku no hi, or Health-Sports Day, a national holiday. It was designated in 1966 to commemorate the opening day of the Tokyo Olympics held in 1964. According to meteorological data, this day is usually sunny every year, so it's when many people choose to hold athletic events.
From the year 2000, the government changed this holiday to the second Monday of October so that people can have a long weekend.
今日は体育の日だね！ひと昔前は10月10日が体育の日で、国民の休日だったよね。これって、1964年に東京オリンピックの開会式が行われた10月10日を記念して、1966年から祝日に指定されたんだってー。この日の晴天率が統計を見ると大変高いらしく、運動会が日本中で開催されていたらしいよ。
でね、2000年度から、政府はこの祝日を連休が取れるように10月の第２月曜日に変更したってさ〜！ #まるはお出かけ
